|
Simply
put, Lymphedema
is the accumulation of excess fluids in the interstitial
tissues.
The
exact nature and placement of the interstitial tissue
can be difficult to imagine because it is not part
of other structures that you might be more familiar
with, like the circulatory system, with its familiar
pattern of blood vessels. Interstitial tissue is the
space outside of the blood vessels and outside of
the other cells.
Sometimes
physicians call it the “third space” because
it occupies an area that doesn’t specifically
belong to the soft tissues in the lymphatic system
that transport the protein rich lymphatic fluids around
the body. In Lymphedema,
these cleansing fluids, so necessary for normal immunity,
seep outside of their normal areas and into the interstitial
tissues. This can cause uncomfortable swelling. In
addition, the protein rich lymphatic fluids are a
smorgasbord for germs to multiply, and this can lead
to infections, sometimes serious. |
