Chronic vs. Acute Pain
Acute pain results from an injury, illness or event such as surgery. It's cause is usually known and is directly related to the amount and duration of the pain. Acute pain is usually best treated pharmaceutically and doesn't usually affect the emotional well being of the patient.
Chronic pain lasts longer than its cause, or may not have a known cause, and can cause emotional distress that is best treated holistically.
